Hiatus

Good Day to all Silence Breakers... I will be taking a long break from the blogosphere for quite some time starting today (Well, i actually started last week but due to some stressful situations this past week I wasn't able to update everyone earlier)... I am taking this hiatus because I will be taking my Nurse's Licensure Exam on December 1 and 2 (to be exact). Hence, I will be reviewing intensively. I know that a month may not be enough but it's better to have done something rather than do nothing, right? I'm asking for all your prayers and best of luck wishes for my upcoming licensure exam...Your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Please read my past posts and continue supporting my blog/site.

My greatest thanks and utmost gratitude extended to all Silence Breakers.

Pink October : Awareness on

This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many sites and even in the entertainment biz have shown support for this month by turning their layouts pink, putting on pink ribbons and even guys wearing pink (there a saying that goes: tough guys wear pink). As a show of support for Pink October, I will be posting this new found study linking fatty foods to breast cancer.

DO you like to eat tasty breaded pork chops, mouth-watering baby back ribs, pork rinds and other fatty foods? Be cautious, if you're post-menopausal. A new study by the National Cancer Institute in the US found a link between breast cancer and eating more fat among women past the age of menstruation. The study followed 188,700 women aged between 50 and 71. They were asked how often they ate 124 different foods, ranging from never up to six times a day, and about the portion size. Then they were followed up for an average of four years. The study found that those who ate the most fat had an 11 percent higher incidence of breast cancer than those who ate the least. They took into account family history of breast cancer, smoking, body mass index and alcohol intake.
Dr. Annie Thiebaut, lead author of the study said, "In this large cohort of post-menopausal US women, we detected a direct association between dietary fat intake and the risk of invasive breast cancer." The researchers suggested that fat may affect breast cancer risk by stimulating hormone production. But they added that more work is needed to further understand the risk.

Blog Action Day

For my blog action day post, I chose to write about the 10 Herbal Medicines advocated by the Philippine Department of Health. As part of their (DOH) program in primary health care and also due to the increasing cost of Pharmaceutical drugs, the use of locally available medicinal plants are encouraged to be used. Many local plants and herbs found in the backyard has been found to be effective in the treatment of common ailments as studied by persons/agencies engaged in research. The ten herbal plants and their therapeutic uses are as follows:

  • Lagundi or 5 Leaveschaste Tree (Vitex negundo)
A shrub growing wild in vacant lots. Matured branches are planted. The flowers are blue and bell-shaped. The small fruits turn black when ripe. It is better to collect the leaves when they are in bloom. Uses: Asthma, cough and fever Dysentery, colds and pain in any part of the body (e.g. headaches) Skin diseases such as dermatitis, scabies, eczema and wounds Rheumatism, sprain, contusions, insect bites Aromatic bath Preparation:
Boil chopped raw fruits or leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes until the water is left in only 1 glass or until it becomes a decoction. For adults, use 4 or 6 tbsp of dried or fresh leaves, respectively, to make the decoction. And for children, use 2-3 tbsp.
  • Yerba Buena or Peppermint mint (Mentha cordifelia)
A small multi-branching aromatic herb, with small, elliptical and toothed margin leaves. The stem creeps to the ground, and develops roots.

Uses:
Headaches, Stomach ache
, Toothaches - make a decoction and drink it every 3 hours.
Rheumatism, arthritis - crush leaves and massage on area where pain is felt.
Cough and colds - use 10 leaves, soak in water and drink as tea.
Swollen gums - Steep 6 gm. in a glass of hot water for 30 mins. and use as a gargle.
Menstrual pain and gas pain - soak a handful of leaves in a glass of hot water and drink as tea.
Nausea and fainting - crush leaves and apply to nostrils.
Insect bites - crush leaves and apply on affected part.
  • Sambong or Camphor/Haliban (Blumea balsamifera)
A plant with rough hairy leaves that reaches 1 1/2 to 3 meters in height.

Uses:
Diuretic, Anti-edema (swelling), anti-urolithiasis - Boil chopped leaves in water for 15 minutes. Divide decoction into 3 parts. Drink one part 3 times a day.

  • Tsaang Gubat or Wild Tea (Carmona retusa)
A shrub with small, shiny leaves that grows in forests and uncultivated areas.

Uses:
Diarrhea - make decoction using 10 or 12 tbsp of dried or fresh leaves, respectively. Divide into 4 parts and drink 1 part every 3 hours.
Stomachache - same with Diarrhea
  • Niyug-Niyogan or Chinese honey suckle/Burma creeper (Quisqualis indica L.)
A vine which bears tiny fruits and grows wild in backyards. The seeds come from mature, dried but newly opened fruits.

Uses:
Anti-helminthic (removal of intestinal worms) - Seeds are taken 2 hours after super. If no worms are expelled, the dose may be repeated after 1 week. Adult take 8-10 seeds, Children 4-12 years of age should take 4-6 seeds.

Hope for ovarian cancer vaccine

Ovarian cancer cell

A vaccine for ovarian cancer has produced "encouraging" results in preliminary trials, us scientists say.

The vaccine is designed to enhance the body's own immune response to the cancer, said the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, based in Buffalo, New York.

Most patients with advanced disease respond to chemotherapy, but more than 70% die from a recurrence of the cancer within five years of diagnosis.

Cancer Research UK welcomed the study but said further trials were needed.

Details of the study appear in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The vaccine contains an ovarian cancer protein fragment coupled with a molecule known to induce immune response.

It targets a protein produced in a high proportion of ovarian cancer cells, but not in healthy cells.

The researchers tested it in women with epithelial ovarian cancer, a cancer type that originates in the covering of the ovaries.

They said although their study was designed as a phase one clinical trial - a preliminary study - it had produced "encouraging" results.

Dual effect

The vaccine induced the immune system to produce antibodies, and to mobilise specialised T cells which were able to target cancer cells producing the key protein.

The researchers detected vaccine-induced immune cells in patients up to 12 months after immunisation, suggesting a long-lasting effect.

Lead researcher Professor Kunle Odunsi said: "There is now compelling evidence that the immune system has the capacity to recognize and kill ovarian cancer cells.

"Our vaccine strategy is simply taking advantage of this knowledge in an effort to improve the outcome for ovarian cancer patients.

"We are confident that the vaccine will eventually be widely available."

Dr Alison Ross, of the charity Cancer Research UK, said: "We welcome any research that could lead to improved survival for people with ovarian cancer, and cancer vaccines have exciting potential.

"This early trial shows encouraging results but it's important to remember that much larger studies will be needed before we know for sure whether the vaccine is safe and effective."

The G

Did you know that women could have more than one kind of orgasm? Yep, not only are the lucky creatures the owner of the only body part dedicated solely to arousal and sexual pleasure (the love button – aka the clitoris), and able to have multiple orgasms with no down time to recharge, women are also able to have several different types of orgasms from genital stimulation.

Just about all-genital arousal for women starts with the clitoris; so ignore this magnificent bundle of nerves at your own peril. However, once a woman is fully aroused via clitoral stimulation, you can either add or switch (depending on the woman’s preference) to different types of genital stimulation for variations on the orgasmic bang.

Which brings us to the much wondered about “G-Spot.” While scientist and sexuality experts still argue whether the spot actually exists, regular people are quietly (and not so quietly) going about seeking it out and all the pleasurable possibilities it can ignite in their love lives.

Getting to the G-Spot

Okay, so let’s get down to the “G-Spot” basics. First off, the name comes from a Dr. Grafenberg who wrote about this special area of a woman’s anatomy back in the 1950’s - it’s not, however, necessarily a spot. On his website doctorg.org Dr. Gary Schubach, a sex educator and writer, quotes from Grafenberg’s originally published study in order to argue for the existence of the sensitive area and gives a very good explanation of what could be going on:

“Grafenberg does not refer to the G-spot as ‘a small but allegedly highly sensitive area on the anterior wall of the human vagina about a third of the way up from the vaginal opening,’ but to the ‘area’ or ‘zone’ on the upper wall of the vagina through which the prostate (aka Skene`s glands and ducts) can be accessed. In women, the prostate gland, while generally smaller than the male prostate, also surrounds the urethra, close to the urethral opening. The great sensitivity comes not from what is on the upper wall of the vagina, but from glands and ducts behind the vaginal wall.”

It’s very important to pay attention to the fact that the sensitive “G-zone” is apparently behind the vaginal wall as well as the fact that this area isn’t sensitive to stimulation unless a woman is already aroused.

So yes, your girl needs to be totally hot and bothered before you let your fingers do the walking to discovery because otherwise you’re going to come up (pardon the pun) dry. In fact, it’s best if she’s already had at least one orgasm before you go on your search just to make sure she’s totally ready. It’s also important to note that the “G-zone” often needs quite strong stimulation in order to trigger any pleasurable response. These two previous reasons, plus the tricky location, explain why the “G-zone” is so challenging for women to both find and trigger on their own.

It’s great to be needed!

The Benefits of Fasting

Fasting is not just the spiritual. Some nutrition experts advocate fasting for purely health reasons. For societies like America where people eat rich diets, fasting for 24 hours allows the digestive system to rest from all that processed food. Below are some benefits of fasting:

  1. Detoxification - The body has built-in process of eliminating toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph glands and skin. Fasting hastens detoxification because when the body doesn't take in food, it draws from its fat reserves for energy. When these fats are converted to energy, they release the chemicals from the fatty acids into the body's system and are excreted.
  2. Healing - Fasting diverts energy from the digestive system to the metabolism and immune system. Tumors and other abnormal growths are deprived of the body's usual supply and become more prone to self-destruct. Also, the body is able to produce protein to replace damaged cells more efficiently resulting in healthier tissues and organs. This is the reason why people lose their appetite when sick with tonsilitis and colds; so the body can divert its energy from the digestive to the immune system.
  3. Longer life - Fasting also lowers the core body temperature. And because hormone production is more efficient, the body releases growth and anti-aging hormones. The results are rejuvenation and a longer life.

Treat your Pores Right

When you don't treat your pores right, they become clogged and enlarged. Coupled with dry skin, pores can look worse than they actually are. Here are some tips to handle your pore problems.

  • Grainy Stuff. Grainy, exfoliating cleansers help your pores polish off dry, dead skin cells that clog your skin. Be gentle when you use them though, and use them just once in a while.
  • Facials. Facials help to remove nasty blackheads and give a thorough, deep-pore cleansing. Make sure that you speak to a facialist so you can discuss your needs and concerns before the service.
  • Microdermabrasion. This lessens the appearance of pores by "roughening up" the skin, loosening the dead skin that clogs pores. It also stimulates collagen to make skin look really smooth. There are at-home products or medical professionals who do this service.
  • Neutral Blotting Powder. Avoid applying foundation to any enlarged pores. Instead, apply a neutral blotting powder. The powder will serve to diffuse the look of the pores so all you'll see is smooth, matted surface.
  • Pore-Perfecting Cream. Look for gels and tinted creams that are formulated to smoothen the appearances of pores. Put the product directly on areas that are bothering you. Let is set then lightly apply powder on it.

15 things you didn't know about the penis

1. Smoking can shorten your penis by as much as a centimeter. Erections are all about good bloodflow, and lighting up calcifies blood vessels, stifling erectile circulation. So even if you don't care all that much about your lungs or dying young, spare the li'l guy.

2. Doctors can now grow skin for burn victims using the foreskins of circumcised infants. One foreskin can produce 23,000 square meters, which would be enough to tarp every Major League baseball infield with human flesh.

3. An enlarged prostate gland can cause both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. If you have an unexplained case of either, your doctor's looking forward to checking your prostate. Even if you're not.

4. The average male orgasm lasts six seconds. Women get 23 seconds. Which means if women were really interested in equality, they'd make sure we have four orgasms for every one of theirs.

5. The oldest known species with a penis is a hard-shelled sea creature called Colymbosathon ecplecticos. That's Greek for " amazing swimmer with large penis".

6. Circumcised foreskin can be reconstructed. Movable skin on the shaft of the penis is pulled toward the tip and set in place with tape. Later, doctors apply plastic rings, caps, and weights. Years can pass until complete coverage is attained.

7. Only one man in 400 is flexible enough to give himself oral pleasure. It's estimated, however, that all 400 have given it their best shot at some point.

8. There are two types of penises. One kind expands and lengthens when becoming erect (a grower). The other appears big most of the time, but doesn't get much bigger after achieving erection (a shower).

9. An international Men's Health survey reports that 79 percent of men have growers, 21 percent have showers.

10. German researchers say the average intercourse lasts two minutes, 50 seconds, yet women perceive it as lasting five minutes, 30 seconds. Are we that good or bad?

11. Turns out size does matter: the longer your penis, the better "semen displacement" you'll achieve when having sex with a woman flush with competing sperm. That's according to researchers at the State University of New York, who used artificial phalluses to test the "scooping" mechanism of the penis's coronal ridge.

12. The penis that's been enjoyed by the most women could be that of King Fatefehi of Tonga, who supposedly deflowered 37,800 women between the years 1770 and 1784 --- that's about seven virgins a day. Go ahead, say it: it's good to be king.

13. Better-looking men may have stronger sperm. Spanish researchers showed women photos of guys who had good, average, and lousy sperm --- and told them to pick the handsomest men. The women chose the best sperm producers most often.

14. No brain is necessary for ejaculation. That order comes from the spinal cord. Finding a living vessel for said ejaculation, however, takes hours of careful thought and, often, considerable amounts of alcohol.

15. The most common cause of penile rupture: vigorous masturbation. Some risks are just worth taking.

TV watching can lead to autism

Experts from Cornell University have evidenece that there is a link between TV watching and autism. "We are not claiming that we have definitive evidence," said Cornell University management professor Michael Waldman, PhD, "but we have evidence that is awfully suggestive." Autism is usually diagnosed when a child is about three years old. Any effect of TV watching would have to happen before that age. Statistics compiled by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that toddlers watch more television when it's raining outside than when it isn't raining. Waldman and his colleagues decided to look at county-by-county autism rates in California, Oregon, and Washington. All three states have huge regional variations in annual rainfall. Waldman found autism rates tended to be higher in the rainiest counties. A second test showed that areas with the most cable TV subscribers had the most autisitic children.
Waldman and his colleagues recommend that until more direct studies confirm or disporve their conclusion, parents should follow the American Academy of Pediatrician's recommendation - no TV before age two, and no more than an hour or two of TV a day for older children.

Toxic Plastic

Disposable mineral water bottles must live up to its name of being "disposable." These bottles should only be used once since excessive use can lead to poisoning.
The bottle is made up of a plastic known as polyethylene terephthalate (or PET). It contains a possible carcinogenic agent called diethylhydroxyalamine (or DEHA). When used for a long period of time, the repeated washing, rinsing and storage in hot environments cause the plastic elements to break down and release the carcinogens in your drinking water.

Bet you didn't know...

  • Almonds are members of the peach family.
  • The symbol on the "pound" key (#) is called an octothorpe.
  • The dot over the letter "i" is called a tittle.
  • The word "checkmate" in chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat", which means "the king is dead."
  • The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days of yore when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases.

Red Meat linked to Breast Cancer

Eating large amounts of red meat may double pre-menopausal women's risk for breast cancer, said a recent study. Researchers from Bringham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston observed over 90,000 pre-menopausal women who were part of the Nurses' Health Study from 1989 to 2003. The women filled-out questionnaires in 1991, 1995, and 1999, where they recorded how often they regularly consumed more than 130 different foods and beverages. When the researchers looked at their red meat intake alongside with their cancer risk, they discovered that women who ate more than one-and-a-half serving of red meat per day almost doubled the risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer compared with those who ate three or less servings per week.
"Several biological mechanisms may explain the positive association between red meat intake and hormone receptor positive breast cancer risk," said research leader, Dr. Eunyoung Cho. His team disclosed that cooked and processed red meats as heterocyclic amines, which are created during the cooking of red meat. Another potential reason is the growth hormones that are given to cattle in the US.

Suicidal ideations

Adolescents and young adults often experience stress, confusion, and depression from situations occurring in their families, schools, and communities. Such feelings can overwhelm young people and lead them to consider suicide as a "solution". Few schools and communities have suicide prevention programs for youth.

Suicide rates increase with age and are very high among those 65 years and older. Most elderly suicide victims are seen by their primary care provider a few weeks prior to their suicide attempt and diagnosed with their first episode of mild to moderate depression. Other adults who are suicidal are also more likely to be suffering from physical illnesses and be divorced or widowed. (DHHS 1999). The highest suicide rate for both genders is in the 80-84 year age group (five to six times more prevalent than among teens).

Which gender tends to be at higher risk?
According to Dr. Barbara Parry, M.D., a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, "Women are more likely to attempt suicide, but men are more likely to complete suicides. Men also tend to use more violent means, like gunshot wounds to the head. Women are more likely to take an overdose and then that can be salvaged. And they tend to do this earlier in the treatment, whereas men would wait till the very end, until they feel like there's no hope and no way out."

Suicide Warning Signs

  • Appearing depressed most of the time.
  • Feeling / expressing hopelessness.
  • Withdrawing from family and friends.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Feeling tired most of the time.
  • Gaining or losing a significant amount of weight.
  • Making statements such as these:
  • "I can't go on any longer."
  • "I hate this life."
  • "Everyone would be better off without me."
  • Losing interest in previously enjoyed activities.
  • Giving away of prized possessions.
  • Writing a will.
  • No sense of humor.
  • Facing a perceived "humiliating" situation or failure.
  • Feeling excessive guilt or shame.
  • Acting irrationally.
  • Increased irritability.
  • Neglecting personal appearance.
  • Abusing alcohol or prohibited drugs.
  • Inability to concentrate.

Acne Mania

What is acne?
Acne is a condition of the skin that appears as different types of bumps. The type of acne that teens often get is scientifically called "acne vulgaris" (vulgaris means "of the common type"). It doesn't just grow on your face. It can grow on your neck, shoulders, upper back and chest too.

Now, the pores in the skin contains sebaceous glands that produces sebum, which is oil that lubricates your hair and skin. When your glands become overactive, too much sebum and too many dead skin cells can cause your pores to clog. Sometimes bacteria get trapped inside your pores and multiply, causing swelling and redness. This is the start of acne.

Is acne hereditary?
Regrettably, it is. If your parents or a close relative had acne break-outs as teens, you will most likely have them too. But don't be anxious. you've heard your grandma or mom telling you not to touch your pimples, right? Heed to their advice! The good news is, acne goes away almost completely if you leave it alone.

Healthy Acne Busters

  1. Take Vitamin B5. It is an anti-stress vitamin involved in healthy cellular reproduction. Take 50mg three times a day.
  2. Take ZINC. It aids in healing tissue and helps prevent scarring. It also helps regulate oil producing glands. Take 30 to no more than 80mg a day.
  3. Take Vitamin C. It doesn't only give you body resistance against viruses but also has anti-inflammatory properties that can control your skin condition. Take 3000mg a day in two doses.
  4. Eat GARLIC. Garlic strengthens the immune system and destroys harmful bacteria and some toxins. Forget the bad odor it could leave in your mouth. You can always brush your teeth and use a mouth rinse after eating.
  5. Eat FISH or take ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS. These have gamma linolenic acid that is needed to keep skin soft. It also repairs damage and helps resolve fatty deposits in the skin pores.
  6. Drink lots of WATER. Water is the best cleansing agent. It aids your body in washing out toxins that may be harmful to the skin.

Go for the Breakfast

Believe your mom when she says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Aside from giving you energy to start your day, breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism so that you burn more calories. When you sleep, your metabolism slows down and it doesn't pick up until you eat again. That's why studies show that those who eat breakfast lose more weight than those who skip a meal!
Of course, if you opt for high sugar and fatty foods, that wouldn't be good for your body either.
For HEALTHY breakfast choices, choose from some of these:

  • Fresh fruit or small glass of citrus juice
  • Whole - grain bread, a bagel or your favorite bread with jam or honey
  • Whole - grain cereal with low-fat or fat-free (skim) milk
  • Oatmeal with skim milk topped with fruit
  • An omelet made from egg whites or egg substitutes
  • Mulitgrain pancakes
  • Fat-free yogurt (try adding cereal or fresh fruit)
